George Washington Bacon & Co.

Bacon 4 & 5 

The following maps were possibly produced very early in the twentieth century and would, therefore, be beyond the scope of this work. However, G W Bacon was such a prolific publisher at this time that the images could have been ready before the turn of the century. 

 

Bacon 4 

The map described below has been seen in three different covers all with the Strand address used by Bacon up to 1917. Once again Bacon showed how he kept up with the times. The first covers included two cyclists and the later introduced a motor car to join the cyclist. Interestingly he almost always had a man and a woman on his covers reflecting the fact that cycling was for everyone.  

Size: 450 x 680 mm.                                Scale: 4 = 90 mm Miles.

Area covered is from King Artur´s Bed north of Liskeard and south to East and West Looe; the eastern limits are Thurlestone and the mouth of the Avon and Luesdon by Corndon Tor. Railways to Yealmpton (Dunstone).

a) Folding into buff cloth covers with coloured view of two cyclists on a river bank (back cover blank) with extra sheet with list of Bacon´s Environs of Towns and District Maps. Printer´s Mark ####. P.

b) Folding into blue cloth covers with two cyclists on a river bank as above  (back cover blank) with extra sheet with list of Bacon´s Environs of Towns and District Maps. Printer´s Mark 23M13. KB.

c) Folding into blue cloth covers with one cyclist and one motor car on a river bank (back cover with list of assorted Bacon maps. Printer´s Mark 25M13.  KB.

Bacon 5 

The map described below also covers Plymouth an was issued from with the Strand address used by Bacon up to 1910. Once again Bacon showed how he kept up with the times. The  cover is decorated slightly in the art nouveau style and this edition included a stret index to the three towns. The scale converts to 6" to the mile.

Size: 455 x 660 mm.   Scale: 1 1/2  = 75 mm Mile.
