Banfield 5 The Reverend Tugwell's North Devon Handbook was written c.1855 (last date in text concerning funds to build a new church, p.7) and first appeared c.1857 with a map (Banfield 5, below) executed by W Gauci of London which is dated 1856. It was possibly commissioned by Banfield as his name appeared on the cover of the second edition. This must have appeared c.1863 as there is a reference to a new wing of the North Devon Infirmary opening in September of that year (p.17). There was a preface to each volume but undated. When the fourth edition appeared c.1877 the prefaces to the first and second editions were included and are now dated. The first preface has a date of 1857, the second 1860 and the preface to the fourth edition is dated 1877. This back-dating was obviously incorrect as far as the second edition is concerned. Size: 330 x 745 mm. SCALE OF MILES (2 = 90 mm). 1. 1857  A Map of the NORTH OF DEVON AND PART OF SOMERSET.  Imprint: Published by John Banfie...
