Dulau – the Thorough Guide Series
Dulau and company began their famous Thorough Guide Series: in 1882 (North Devon and Cornwall) and 1884 (South Devon and Cornwall). The editors (and probably also authors) were Baddeley and Ward, hence the series became known as the Baddeley & Ward series. In the two volumes, a total of 28 maps of areas of Devon and Cornwall were included. The Devon maps have been collated for the known editions. The list below shows which editions have been discovered so far and provides an overview of the editions and maps produced until 1901. More editions are likely to come to light. The first editions had the same maps with minor changes. In 1888 new maps were prepared and others were renumbered[1]. All maps were produced by the company of J Bartholomew.
The two lists should help in a) providing reference copies which can be checked and b) help in identifying loose maps (or helping to find missing maps when restoring copies).
Illustrated are the inside cover overview maps from North Devon and North Cornwall Sixth Edition 1893 and South Devon and South Cornwall Fifth Edition 1900. Notes to individual maps, e.g. map number on EP map: MAP I (p.18) refer to these maps on inside cover (end papers); this may help to identify examples lacking title pages.

[1] However, early 1888 editions have the fourth edition text but still contain the third edition maps.
[2] This edition was published early and a paper inserted inside the end papers (dated March 26, 1888) explains the absence of the two new maps of the Lizard and Land’s End owing to delays. The text is the fourth edition and includes the ticket prices for 1887. Printed by J S Levin.
[3] Although the title page is dated 1892 several railway adverts are dated 1891 indicating either an earlier printing to cope with demand or leftover adverts being used.
