John Bartholomew 3 -  for Houlston & Wright / Houlston & Sons

Houlston and Wright, and later Houlston & Sons, were supplied by John Bartholomew with maps for their series of Tourists’ Maps. The output was impressive with maps covering most of England and Wales’ tourist areas but the maps seem to have been all produced between 1865-1875. Houlston and Wright advertised 27 maps on their map of Plymouth and Dartmoor (3c) but Houlston and Sons were advertising 50 maps only a few years later (on cover to 3d) but not Torquay. Although the British Library holds a copy of Sophie Veitch‘s A Lonely Life dated 1870 most of the early Houlston & Sons imprints are dated 1872. In the following year Houlston & Sons published a volume of N T Carrington’s poems (Noel Thomas Carrington 1777-1830) in conjunction with William Wood of Devonport. Dartmoor and The Banks of the Tamar were published as one volume, probably to exploit the fact that there were plans for a memorial to be designed by Wightwick to the Devon poet to be placed on top of Dewerstone[1].

Bartholomew Imperial Map 3a (Houlston & Wright 1)

Size: 256 x 343 mm.          Scale of Miles (8 = 50 mm).

ENVIRONS OF TORQUAY (Ee). No imprint. Engraver's signature: Drawn & Engraved by J. Bartholomew, Edinr. (EeOS). Although titled Torquay it nearly covers the whole of the south of the county: the map covers an area from Launceston to Sidmouth (ie missing some of the east of Devon) and north to include Okehampton and Exeter.

Railways are consistent with early issues of the Imperial map (circa 1868); although the line to Ashburton (completed 1872, probably projected) is included the Crediton-Okehampton is only projected (1871) and the line to Kingswear has no branch to Brixham (1868). The planned line to Kingsbridge is incorrectly shown (not completed until 1893).

The map covers the whole of North Devon from the north coast and south to Tavistock and Newton Abbot; Bodmin Moor is shown in the west to Bridgewater Bay and Chardstock in the east (ie missing a small piece of the east of Devon). Parliamentary Divisions are shown, eg N.D. near Chulmleigh.

Railways are consistent with early issues of the Imperial map (circa 1868); although the line to Bideford (completed 1855) is included the Crediton-Okehampton is only completed as far as Sampford Courtenay (completed to Okehampton in 1871). The planned line to Kingsbridge is incorrectly shown (not completed until 1893).
