Cockrem´s Guide Book to Torquay – Map 2
Was previously Westley 2
The first edition of Cockrem's Tourist's Guide to Torquay appeared in 1856[1] but did not contain any map. There appear to be two editions of this: an illustrated version with up to 14 views by Rock & Co. (240pp.); and a cheaper verion with illustrations but lacking sections such as geology, climate etc. (163 pp.). There was no map included which is surprising, given that Cockrem had already published three good maps (Cockrem 3, 4 and 5) which could have been exploited.
A revised edition was published circa 1865.[2] This edition included two new maps, both supplied by Stanford in London (see next entry). The guide now had 208 pages and just one frontispiece illustration. Reprinting took place in circa 1870 (last date in text p. 20 with Belgrave Congregational Church) and circa 1875 (p. 13 to do with the Petty Sessions Court built by W A Goss), both guides now having 220 pages, two maps and a list of Hackney Carriage Fares. By this time Edward Cockrem had died (on 4th September 1872) and the guide was published by Westley & Co. shortly after they took over his business. A final revised edition appeared circa 1882, now under Westley´s title and imprint and simultaneously with a pocket-sized handy version with only one map (see previous entry).

Map occupies central panel of a double page advertising layout: upper band has adverts for Westley’s publications; left and right borders are lists of banks, institutions, hotels etc.; and the lower border has information on physicians, surgeons and post office details below a line advertising the products of Shapley and Austin. [1] This edition has 220 smaller pages (140 x 90 mm) with no advertisements (2 page index 1 Hackney Carriage Fares).
[2] Tow copies dated 1868 and 1870.
[3] This edition has only 159 pages, of which 115-159 are advertisements. Although the last date in the text is 1873 (p.15) there is an advertisement for a Perinet’s champagne of 1874 as well as a footnote (on p.23) mentioning White's History of Torquay to 1878 recently published.
[4] The date is based on dates and information contained in two advertisements for insurance companies in the advertising section. One company, The Northern Insurance Company, was established in 1836 and includes information on Financial Position at close of 45th year. The second, the North British and Mercantile, lists Establishment (ie leading officers) for 1882. Both printings have same adverts.
[5] This edition has xx plus 185pp. of which 121-185 are advertisements, 140 x 85 mm. BL copy 10358.a.39.
[6] The work itself has been considerably expanded and rewritten. It now has Xvi plus 284 pp. of which 219-284 are advertisements, 160 x 100 mm
[7] The hotel information is confusing. Why delete one name but add another? Hotels in the panel list are not all shown on the map. This may indicate that this is in fact the earlier state. The map has a second plan on the reverse (see Mardon, Son and Hall).
